Books for Change USA is a growing nonprofit formed to promote literacy initiatives both locally and globally. In addition, we strive to increase the use of diverse children’s literature in today’s classrooms.
2020 presented many challenges for educators, students, and parents. As many schools and libraries closed due to the pandemic, access to books took on an even more important role. Books for Change USA is proud to have sponsored the following educators and their literacy initiatives in these unprecedented times.
Esther Jackson Elementary, Fulton County, GA
Through generous donations and grants, Books for Change USA distributed:
$1,800.00 in teacher mini-grants to help build diverse classroom libraries.
$3,000.00 donation to Luis Soriano and his Biblioburro Library in La Gloria, Colombia
$5,000.00 in grants to Summer-Pandemic Book Distribution Programs across Georgia.
$1,400.00 donation to Big Red READS, a mobile library in Dalton, GA.
“Dearing Elementary was blessed by a Books for Change USA Grant for this school year. With this money, we were able to order over 400 hundred books for our students to read and enjoy while continuing their love of reading!
Our school year has looked a bit different this year due to COVID 19, however, this allowed us to ensure that these books were placed directly in the hands of our students during material pick up for the virtual start of our school year. The first few weeks were virtual for DES but that didn’t stop our love of reading! Thanks to the Books for Change USA grant, our students were able to have fiction and nonfiction books at home to read and enjoy before we moved to a face to face model in September and then had access to our media center. What a blessing to be able to send text/printed books home with our students while we were in a virtual model! The students were SO excited that they got to keep their own book if they wanted!”
